Résumé
This paper presents a pilot evaluation of the Ampi’Zay project, a school-based intervention in Madagascar that leverages a Sport for Development (SFD) program to promote gender equality. The objective of this pilot study is to lay the groundwork for a large-scale evaluation in anticipation of future program expansion. The “Rugby for Change” approach is assessed using a Difference-in-Differences (DiD) design. The analysis focuses on the program’s effects on behaviors, attitudes towards the opposite gender, non-cognitive skills, and gender norms. Preliminary results indicate that the program has been successfully implemented, fostering mixed-gender participation in ball games and making these activities more enjoyable for girls. We also find encouraging evidence of improvements in non-cognitive skills, particularly among boys, while effects on the deconstruction of gender stereotypes appear weaker and more mixed.
