Masahiro obtained his PhD in Economics at Brown University in 2024. In his dissertation, he works on the origin of identity and ideology, shedding light on France and West Africa. Moreover, he's been studying the long-term effects of displacement for Cambodian refugees with full-count census microdata.

Broadly, he uses historical and observational data in his work to study questions at the intersection of political economy, economic history, comparative development, and development economics.

His research agenda seeks to advance our understanding of the long-term impacts embedded in society and people in terms of institutions, culture and history.
