A workshop organized by the French Association of Development Economists

The AFEDEV, The French Association of Development Economists organizes an online workshop on Female Genital Cutting (FGC) on January 22, 2026, starting at 09:00 (Paris time). This scientific event will bring together development economists and NGO practitioners to build a dialogue on this topic between academic research and field experience.

The workshop is organized by Melchior Clerc (Université Clermont Auvergne, CERDI), Mathilde Lesueur (University of Bologna) et Daniel Pérez Parra (Université Gustave Eiffel). Melchior Clerc will talk about his study “Facing Pressure, Choosing Distance: FGC and Girls’ Mobility in SSA”. He examines family choice and excision, a genital mutilation prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. He investigates whether parents decide to relocate or if they leave their daughters in the care of another household to protect them from FGC.
