Climate Risks, Adaptation Information, and Investments in Children: Experimental Evidence from Rural Egypt

Résumé : This paper examines how information about climate risks and adaptation shapes household decisions regarding children’s education and labor. We leverage an ongoing randomized controlled trial (RCT) among smallholder farmers in Upper Egypt, in which farmers receive information on climate-related risks to agriculture together with practical adaptation strategies. We find that adaptation information increases the perceived need for family labor. Consistent with a substitution effect, farmers become more willing to rely on children’s labor during agricultural shocks and to substitute girls into farm work when boys work off-farm. We also find evidence consistent with an income effect: farmers become more accepting of school dropout and more willing to reallocate educational investment across children. Overall, the findings highlight how responses to climate risk and adaptation can extend beyond agricultural decisions, with implications for child labor and human capital investment.

The incidence of return migration

Résumé : We draw on micro-data from 234 population censuses conducted between 1960 and 2020 in 81 different countries to provide evidence on the incidence of return migration. This is crucial to correctly assess the relevance of international migration when temporary migration episodes are the rule rather than the exception. We leverage three types of questions on past residence that are commonly included in population censuses, which allow (fully or at least partly) identifying returnees in the native population.
