Marrying a Migrant? Climate Shocks and Marriage Preferences in Senegal

Résumé : This paper examines how climate-related vulnerability shapes preferences for marriage with a migrant in Senegal, where migration and marriage may jointly serve as household risk-management strategies. We implement a discrete choice experiment among young unmarried women and their mothers, who repeatedly choose between hypothetical migrant and local husbands with experimentally varying characteristics. Using mixed logit models, we account for unobserved heterogeneity in marriage preferences and investigate how preferences vary with exposure to climatic shocks, access to social protection, and across generations. By eliciting preferences rather than relying solely on realized marriages, we provide new evidence on the interplay between migration, marriage, and household responses to vulnerability.
