One-year position in Development Economics

The CERDI, Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches sur le Développement International, is looking for an outstanding post-doctoral candidate in development economics. The successful applicant will join a research team working on the economics of natural disasters in a stimulating environment.

Research Project

This project aims to study the economic consequences of volcanic eruptions that generate significant natural disasters, building collapses, social and human losses.

The current pricing methods used to estimate the monetary value of these losses are subject to a series of context-specific constraints. The determination of the value of non-market goods and services is still not a consensual exercise, as the economic literature provides a wide range of tools. Most assessments are based on direct costs that arise in the aftermath of the volcanic physical events. However, the major components of the total costs of natural disasters are indirect, and the full costs of disasters are underestimated.

The applicant should have strong skills in applied development economics including:

  • Risk economics;
  • Disaster cost assessment;
  • Microeconometrics;
  • Large data sets management.

She/he should be able to conduct high-level research and publish in international peer-reviewed journals. She/he should be fluent in English.

Main duties

  • Complete a review of the literature on the estimation of the direct and indirect costs of volcanic events and specifically studies on the monetary value estimation of their indirect consequences.
  • Quantify the indirect losses suffered by various developing countries resulting from volcanic events with an existing database. This database records in a detailed and qualitative manner the damages caused by several eruptions on dwellings, schools, energy infrastructure, telecommunications, road infrastructure, water systems, agricultural land, etc. The project also includes the valuation of the health-related costs or the outcomes in terms of supply and/or productivity on the labor market.

One-year position, starting as soon as possible.

Net salary: approximately 2000 € per month.

Application

Review of applications will start immediately and continue until the position is filled.
The applicants should send a two-page CV and a cover letter to Pascale Phélinas and Michaël Goujon.
