Does EITI help protect forest cover?

Extractive industries pose a severe threat to the environment, but implementing a fair and transparent tax system can help mitigate the damage. By doing so, the industries can fund alternative measures to prevent deforestation in the short, medium, and long term. The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) initiative was established in 2003 to promote transparency, good governance, and accountability in using oil, gas, and mining revenues in countries rich in resources. The main objective is to ensure that revenue transparency leads to better sustainable development outcomes, including socio-economic development and environmentally sound industrial practices.
